Dr Matthew Krilis is a Sydney Eye Hospital and Oxford University Eye Hospital trained ophthalmologist, with dual-fellowship training in glaucoma surgery, complex cataract surgery, and retinal and inflammatory diseases of the eye.  

Dr Krilis grew up in Sydney and completed a Bachelor of Economics (B.Econ), followed by a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). He then undertook his junior general medical training at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, whilst simultaneously completing a Masters degree in Ophthalmology (M.Med) at the University of Sydney.

He subsequently completed the five year ophthalmology specialty training program at Sydney Eye Hospital, earning his Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology (FRANZCO). 

Following his FRANZCO training in Sydney, Matthew spent two years at the world renowned Oxford University Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom and completed:

  1. A one year fellowship in medical retinal diseases and uveitis
  2. A one year fellowship in glaucoma surgery and complex cataract surgery

At Oxford, Dr Krilis was comprehensively trained by world leaders in minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (micro-stents), traditional glaucoma surgery (trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage devices), complex cataract surgery and pterygium surgery.

Matthew also gained expertise in the treatment of retinal diseases including diabetic eye disease, age related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion and uveitis. This involved all forms of retinal laser and intravitreal injections.

Dr Krilis is an associate clinical lecturer at both the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales. He also works in the public system at St George Hospital where he conducts clinical  research into the link between the gut and eye, and is involved in a gene therapy study for the dry form of age related macular degeneration. He also speaks Greek.
